How palletizers work:

Robot Palletizer

The products arriving at a conveyor belt line are picked up by a hydraulic robotic arm and placed onto a pallet in an organized fashion. Robotic palletizers are very flexible as they can be modified to handle basically any product, Therefore they have lots of naming varieties depending on what they can manipulate: This is also one of their advantages, and they also occupy less space than conventional palletizers so can service multiple pallets from multiple conveyor belts, but however they generally cost more, and they also lack their speed.

Low and high level palletizers

These conventional palletizers operate with the help of conveyors and an area that receives the goods to be palletized. Low level palletizers load products from the ground level, while high level ones load from above. History of Palletizers

A palletizer is a machine designed to automate the process of stacking boxes containing goods or products onto a pallet. Manually placing boxes on pallets can be time-consuming and costly, as well as subjecting workers to significant physical strain. The first mechanized palletizer was developed, built, and installed in 1948 by a company then known as Lamson Corp. In the 1950s, specific palletizers for row formation were introduced. These devices organize loads in a dedicated area and then transfer them to another section, where layer formation occurs. This process is repeated until a complete layer of goods is ready to be placed on a pallet. In the 1970s, to meet the need for faster palletizing speeds, the inline palletizer was developed. This model uses a continuous flow divider to guide goods to the desired position on the layer-forming platform. Robotic palletizers, introduced in the 1980s, are equipped with an end-of-arm tool (end effector) that allows them to pick products from a conveyor or a layering table and place them on a pallet. Both conventional and robotic palletizers can operate at different heights: from high levels (2.13–3.15 m) to lower levels (0.76–0.91 m). In recent years, end-of-arm tools have been enhanced to adapt to various configurations and packaging types.

Mixed Case Palletizing

Mixed case palletizing is a practical application of the three-dimensional bin packing problem (3D Bin Packing Problem). The goal is to optimize space utilization by stacking boxes of varying sizes efficiently on a minimal number of pallets. Although widely used in logistics, this technique remains a complex challenge, often still reliant on manual labor. The challenges of mixed case palletizing include not only enabling a robot to correctly grasp incoming items but also determining the optimal size and placement position for each box on the pallet. Recently, some research has explored the use of Deep Reinforcement Learning, aiming to train robotic agents to determine optimal placements by simulating multiple palletizing scenarios. In some cases, these learned models have been successfully applied in real-world environments.
