Filling machine: types and methods

During filling, the inert gas present in the container returns to the tank and when the product level in the container reaches the nozzle, filling stops and the valve closes.  
  • Vacuum or depression filling

In vaccum or depression filling, when the filling nozzle is inserted into the empty container, the bottle gets sealed and the air in the bottle is removed using a vacuum pump. The vacuum in the bottle then pulls liquid into the bottle until the product reaches the predetermined filling level. This system is suitable for wine and spirits since no aroma or alcohol content are lost.  
  • Volumetric filling

In volumetric filling, the volume of the liquid is measured. One of the filling valves is equipped with a magnetic flow meter which measures the volume transferred to the container. Electronics allows you to quantify the time required to fill the desired quantity of product. All the other filling valves are pneumatically managed on the basis of the time defined by the valve with the magnetic flow meter.  
  • Isobaric or counter pressure filling

An isobaric filling machine allows the processing of champagne, spumante, sparkling wines, still wines and carbonated drinks. With isobaric filling systems champagne, spumante and sparkling wines can be filled with optimized filling cycles to reduce downtime because there is no need for potential degassing in various stages of the production line.   • Hot filling

Hot filling is used for all those products that are not completely liquid e. g. tomato purée or fruit juices that have high quantities of organic substances, but also milk or cream. The process consists of filling the bottle at a temperature between 80 ° / 85 ° C, after which there is a nitrogen injection aimed at avoiding the implosion during cooling to room temperature. Many drinks need an aseptic container and the hot fill process has the advantage of using the heat of the product itself to make the container sterile.  
  • Aseptic filling

Aseptic filling is a type of filling where the entire bottling process is carried out in a completely sterile, waterproof environment. It allows you to bottle a commercially sterile beverage in a technically sterile food plant. The entire production takes place in a germ-free environment where the food and packaging is sterilized separately and combined under aseptic conditions. A sterile environment is essential for aseptic filling, which exists precisely for filling sensitive products that have no self-protective measures against the proliferation of microorganisms.
